Discovering the heart of Story…
I believe in the power and necessity of stories; that they can impact and change our perceptions.
Mankind has used stories in varying forms down the ages. Throughout my development as a writer I have become deeply interested in tales that span culture, age, gender and time. Why are the same stories repeated time and again? Why do they capture the imagination of so many? Christopher Vogler states that, ‘Stories built on the model of the Hero’s journey have an appeal that can be felt by everyone, because they well up from a universal source in the shared unconscious and reflect universal concerns.’ Perhaps this universal appeal stems from a subconscious desire to resolve our own inner conflict.
Wherever these philosophies may take me, one thing I know is that I love the unifying nature of stories; the connections they create between performer and audience, reader and writer. For me, this is where the magic lies.
